Last week I switched computers at work. I retired my Macbook to solely be my personal computer. It was a tough decision but one that I don't regret. It was tough because I do need some proprietary software with clients and for community work from time to time and just being able to switch between Ubuntu and the apps that I needed was easy. However, working in a virtual machine all the time took its toll, and I decided to give it a try to switch things around and use a computer running Ubuntu with Gnome 3 properly and have the proprietary things in a VM. That meant to give up on Mac as it's not legal to run it on non-Apple hardware. So you know what I had to go back to and I'm totally lost. So if it takes me longer to get into a webinar, you know why. ;-) The computer you see here is the Lenovo X1 Carbon 2014 edition. It's running pretty well for the most part and even recognized my external touchpad after attempting to pair it for the 30th or so time. I'm not yet a big fan of the strange keyboard but start getting the hang of it. It's pretty much as small as the Mac Air but has a 14" screen. The transfer of the files and config settings for software went very smoothly and I'm happy that I didn't have to set all those up by hand. Installing missing software, moving files by hand that weren't stored in my home directory, setting up all my Mahara instances etc. was plenty of manual work, but at least it was good exercise. :-) Now I'm just waiting for my Mahara skin... |
