Description
This is a painting of Governor Thomas Lowry Young (12/14/1832-7/20/1888), who was born in Killyleagh, Ireland. Thomas moved to Ohio in 1859 and served as Ohio House Representative 1866-1868 and then as Ohio Senator 1871-1873. From 1869-1870 Thomas served as the Hamilton County Recorder. He was elected Ohio Lieutenant Governor 1875-1877 with Rutherford B. Hayes as the Governor. In March, 1877 Rutherford B. Hayes resigned his office of governor of Ohio to become President of the US and thus, Young became Ohio's Governor from 1877-1878. He later served in the US House of Representatives 1879-1883. In 1886 he was appointed to the Cincinnati Board of Public Affairs by Governor Joseph Foraker, and held that position until his death. His first wife was Margaret Riddle and his second was Sarah Agnes Riddle.
