Die Broschur enthält den Wortlaut des Briefes vom 19. 12. 1936 der Philosophischen Fakultät der Universität Bonn, mit dem Thomas Mann der Entzug der Ehrendoktorwürde mitgeteilt wurde, und seine Antwort, ausgearbeitet vom 27. – 31.12.1936.

Thomas Mann schreibt aus der Emigration, den kommenden Weltkrieg voraussehend, über Nazi-Deutschland: Sinn und Zweck des nationalsozialistischen Staatssystem ist einzig der und kann nur dieser sein: das deutsche Volk unter unerbittlicher Ausschaltung, Niederhaltung, Austilgung jeder störenden Gegenregung für den «kommenden Krieg» in Form zu bringen,

Der offene Brief endet mit den Worten: Gott helfe unserm verdüsterten und mißbrauchten Lande und lehre es, seinen Frieden zu machen mit der Welt und mit sich selbst!
