Summary edit

Description Thompson reflecting galvanometer with 2 coils, from around 1900. The small mirror, center, and the two small magnets in the center of the two helical coils, are suspended by a delicate fiber. In operation, the door is closed, and a light beam shining through the window and reflecting off the mirror onto a separate scale, serves as the pointer. The current to be measured passes through the coils and deflects the magnets and mirror. There are two magnets and two coil assemblies, with the magnets' N poles pointed in opposite directions, to cancel out the Earth's magnetic field. This design is called an astatic galvanometer.
