Description 'Figure des Sereines': Contemporary illustration of three sirens, or mermaids, from the Ballet Comique de la Reine, 1581. The sirens escorted a chariot, designed like a fountain, containing Queen Louise and her ladies above, and musicians below. The narrative of the ballet, one of the "magnificences" of the age of Catherine de' Medici, mother of Henri III of France, was based on the myth of Circe, who turned men into beasts. This symbolised the state of civil war in France at the time.
