Description

Tiberias

English: Ottoman Empire: Palestine, North Palestine, Lake Tiberias, Tiberias. The town of Tiberias as seen from the southern slope. Turkish tents have been pitched outside the broken city walls, a truck and storage drums can be seen near the waters edge. Tiberias is nestled on the western shore of Lake Tiberias (or Lake Galilee) and was founded in the 18th century by Herod Antipas, who named it after the Emperor of Rome, Tiberias. In 1837 an earthquake destroyed sections of the city wall. In recent times Tiberias has grown outside the city walls and along the shore. One of a series of photographs showing local people and the activities of German and Turkish soldiers. The photographs are believed to have been purchased by Australian soldiers whilst serving in Egypt and Palestine during the First World War.

This image is in the public domain because it is a mere mechanical scan or photocopy of a public domain original, or – from the available evidence – is so similar to such a scan or photocopy that no copyright protection can be expected to arise. The original itself is in the public domain for the following reason:
Public domain
This work first published in the Ottoman Empire is now in the public domain because the Empire's copyright formalities were not met (copyright notice, registration, and deposit), or because the copyright term (30 years after the death of the author, sometimes less) expired before the Empire was dissolved (details).

This tag is designed for use where there may be a need to assert that any enhancements (eg brightness, contrast, colour-matching, sharpening) are in themselves insufficiently creative to generate a new copyright. It can be used where it is unknown whether any enhancements have been made, as well as when the enhancements are clear but insufficient. For known raw unenhanced scans you can use an appropriate {{PD-old}} tag instead. For usage, see Commons:When to use the PD-scan tag.

Note: This tag applies to scans and photocopies only. For photographs of public domain originals taken from afar, {{PD-Art}} may be applicable. See Commons:When to use the PD-Art tag.
