Title
English: Tidal flats south of downtown Seattle, October 27, 1923
Description
English:

This photograph of the tidal flats taken from south is facing northwest towards SoDo and downtown Seattle. Smith Tower is dimly visible in the distance. This area was made up of tidal flats where people and companies were allowed to dig canals and deposit the spoils to make new land. The new buildings, plank roads, and boardwalks were supported by timber pile foundations. This photo is from an album of photographs documenting Beacon Hill and construction around Seattle in 1923, probably of projects by the Puget Sound Bridge and Dredging Company (later Lockheed Shipbuilding and Construction Company), a major contributor to the construction of the Pacific Northwest. All of the photos were taken by noted Seattle photographer Asahel Curtis.

Signs in image: Puget Sound Wagon Works, Wm. Riegel, Prop.; Fairbanks Morse & Co.; Seattle Mattress & Upholstery Co; J. W. Fales Paper Company. Inscribed on negative: Looking N.W. from Fry's cattle shed, 10-27-23

  • Subjects (LCTGM): Business districts--Washington (State)--Seattle; Wetlands--Washington (State)--Seattle

"Fry's" is a misspelling of "Frye's", the major slaughterhouse and meat packing plant that was here at that time (originally Frye & Bruhn).
