English: The Prehistoric burial ground at Tift outside Linköping in the province Östergötland, Sweden. The Iron Age (approax 500 BC - 1050 AD) burial ground at Tift is the largest surviving example in the province. It holds at least 622 ancient monuments. All the different kinds of grave monuments from the period are represented. Low round barrows completely dominate, but rectungular square and tringular ones are also represented. At the highest point of the ridge lies the oldest part of the burial ground. Here a large number of raised stones can be ound. Howewer, only one is still standing, the rest have been overturned. The must once have been a striking sight, seen from the flat lands to the north. In the same area lies a group of round grave mounds with collapses squarce structures in the middle. The collapsed areas may once have held wooden grave chambers. |
