DescriptionGanoderma lipsiense in Burnham Beeches - geograph.org.uk - 278777.jpg |
English: Tinder fungus in Burnham Beeches The Tinder Fungus or Hoof Fungus (Fomes fomentarius)is a bracket fungus. This is growing on a dead beech trunk. "Tinder" because it has been used as tinder for thousands of years; its Latin name just means "Tinder used for tinder". "Hoof" because the shape is like the hoof of a horse. See http://www.messiah.edu/Oakes/fungi_on_wood/poroid%20fungi/species%20pages/Fomes%20fomentarius.htm by Gary Emberger of Messiah College. |
