Object history 1969: transferred to Uffizi Gallery, Florence from Contini Bonacossi collection, Florence
Notes Poland and Lithuania at that time were considered as one on the largest exporters of pelts of various animals: "the total number of hides exported from Poland in the second half of the 16th century amounted to about 150,000" (Acta Poloniae Historica, 1968, Volumes 18 - 20, p. 203). A companion to a portrait of his third wife Catherine of Austria (1533-1572) with similar dimensions (109 × 91 cm / 110 × 83 cm), now in Belgrade, both from Contini Bonacossi collection. Previously identifed as portrait of a gentleman in a fur coat or a portrait of Doge Alvise Mocenigo by Jacopo Tintoretto. Current identification and attribution by Marcin Latka (Artinpl), 03.04.2021.
