The totem pole was erected in Pioneer Place on October 18, 1899. The 200-room Hotel Seattle, known as the Occidental Block, was built by Seattle businessman John Collins in 1890 right after the Great Seattle Fire of 1889. Originally named the Occidental Hotel, it was soon renamed the Hotel Seattle.
