Description

Methods of stopping rats jumping off ships were pondered on 10 March 1910 as concerns about the plague escalated.

Nelson City Engineer Samuel Jickell took up this cause, penning a two-page letter to the Wellington Chamber of Commerce applauding its efforts to take action against the risk of the plague being brought to New Zealand. Ranging from a description of the wily ways of rats to suggestions as to how best to boil linen, Jickell’s letter was tabled with thanks by the Colonial Secretary who offered no opinion on the situation.

Shown here is part of Samuel Jickell’s letter.
