nificent, and the illustration gives but a faint ideaof its grandeur. Views up ravines disclosed snow-capped mountains, below which were forests of darkpine, and the different zones of vegetation could bedistinctly traced. Just below the snow, grass wasgrowing, and then in rotation followed pine forests, rhododendrons, mixed evergreens, and then in valleyssub-tropical plants. I should here note that the vege-tation is.more Tibetan in character than Chinese. Onthe road I noticed a single rope suspension bridge overa river. This consisted of a bamboo cable about threeinches in diameter, stretched across about 120 feetabove the water, and having a free running plaitedbamboo ring upon it. From this ring an inverted T-piece, with the shank about four feet long, hung, andliixht haulino- lines were attached to it and to each bank. The traveller seats himself on the cross of the T, andthen, the cable of course being in a curve, on letting gofrom the bank liis own weight carries him half-way, or

The city of Ta-tsien-lu is not seen by the travelleruntil he is close to the yates, and on entering, the streetsare ^found to be crowded with a strange mixture ofraces. The houses are certainly Chinese, but tlie popu-lation is a mixture of all the nations of Asia, Tibetanspredominating. I made my way through the city, and, passing out by the south gate, soon found the house ofthe Eoman Catholic Bishop—Monseigneur Biet—whoreceived me very kindly, and interested himself ingetting rooms at an inn in the city, the same place thatCaptahi Gill and Mr. Baber had stopped at. 184 CHAPTEE X TA-TSIEN-LU Meet Mr. Rockhill—His joiirney—Missionaries give great assistance—Christian collectors—Hard life and devotion of the missionaries—Description of the inn—Prayer papers—Caravans—-Caravan drivers—Their dress—The landladys wealth—Value
