Description
English: One of the 40 drawings made by Tobias Mayer in preparation of his map of the Moon. It is marked as number 14. It shows Mare Crisium and bottom to top the four craters Langrenus, Vendelinus, Petavius (with central peak) and Furnerius. This drawing was published in 1881 by Ernst Friedrich Wilhelm Klinkerfues (1827-1884) in Tobias Mayer's grössere Mondkarte nebst Detailzeichnungen. -- Göttingen: Univ.-buchdr. von E.A. Huth. With this publication Klinkerfues tried to build upon the succes of the maps of the Moon by Wilhelm Gotthelf Lohrmann and Johann Friedrich Julius Schmidt, both published in 1878. Mayer's drawings were not engraved, but copied from their originals by photographic means.
