Summary edit

Description Introduced, warm season, annual herb to 60 cm tall; stems are hairless or cobwebby. Leaves are chiefly basal, lanceolate to linear and up to 11 cm long; lower leaves are toothed to pinnatifid; upper leaves are entire or toothed, uppermost filiform. Flowerheads are cymose. Heads are 4–6 mm diam, with ligulate florets; outer florets yellow, with a purple band at the base of the ligule; central-most florets purple or brownish. Flowering is in summer. A native of the Mediterranean region, it grows on roadsides and other disturbed sites in grasslands, woodlands and sclerophyll forests.
