Description

Church of the Convent of Christ to the glory of Manuel Ist reign, King of Portugal and Grand Master of the Order of Christ.
Due to the lack of space to build buttresses, the stability of the building is ensured, like medieval churches with a single nave, by the mass of the two imposing botaréus (buttresses) which frame the facade.
In the upper part, the statues illustrate the exceptional conditions for which, in 1495, Dom Manuel I acceded to the throne by succeeding his cousin Dom João II who died childless.

The so-called Chapter room window glorifies the maritime discoveries of the Portuguese navigators of the XVthand XVIth< /sup>century.
