Summary
editDescriptionTonga aerosol layers over Texas 14 Apr 2022.jpg |
English: Aerosol layers from the historic 15 January 2022 volcanic eruption of Tonga measured by twilight photometry over the Geronimo Creek Atmospheric Monitoring Station in Central Texas on 14 April 2022. These extraordinarily high layers (30 km to 71 km) include mesopheric volcanic aerosols at heights not previously detected by scientific instruments prior to Tonga. A NASA report concluded that the peak Tonga aerosols reached 58 km. The same report included GOES 17 images indicating a peak of 87 km. |

The chart shows data measured by a twilight photometer in which a 910 nm LED serves as a wavelength-dependent photodiode. The LED has a field-of-view of <2 degrees. It is connected to a small 120 dB log converter (AD8304). The data are saved by a 16-bit Onset data logger. Details are in Make Magazine (Forrest M. Mims III, Cosmic Dust and Space Debris, vol. 79, pp. 86-89). The chopped signal at 20-24 km is caused by the Gemini Twins (stars) passing across the LED's field of view.
