Description

A RPPC dating to 1907. This postcard appears to be a hand tinted version of US Navy photo #: 19-N-60-10-17. I believe Enrique Muller did the hand tinting of this photo for the post card, ( see his copyright claim in lower left hand corner, he also added the sailor in the foreground to make it appear to be a different photo. ) he probably took the photo as he was a photographer for the US Navy and published many photos of navy ships as postcards, it was published by Edward H. Mitchell of San Francisco Ca. Info from Navsource.org about the black and white version of this photo " Photo #: 19-N-60-10-17, destroyers at the Norfolk Navy Yard, Virginia, Autumn 1907. The destroyers in the foreground basin (from left to right): USS Hull (Destroyer # 7); USS Lawrence (Destroyer # 8); USS Hopkins (Destroyer # 6); USS Whipple (Destroyer # 15) and USS Truxtun (Destroyer # 14). USS Stewart (Destroyer # 13) is at the end of the dock, at right, and USS Talbot (Torpedo Boat # 15) is hauled out on the marine railway at left. On the opposite side of the river are several torpedo boats of the Reserve Torpedo Flotilla and their barracks ship, the old cruiser Atlanta. Photograph from the Bureau of Ships Collection in the U.S. National Archives." Note the unusual turtle back deck on the bow of these destroyers.
