Description

La Torre de Hércules, en La Coruña (España). Es el faro en activo más antiguo del mundo. Construido en el siglo II d.C. por los romanos, aunque la mitología la atribuye a Hércules, su arquitecto fue en realidad Cayo Sevio Lupo, natural de Coímbra (hoy Portugal), que dedicó esta obra a Marte, el dios romano de la guerra. Su aspecto actual lo debe a la restauración que dirigió el ingeniero militar extremeño Eustaquio Giannini, por orden del rey Carlos III, entre 1788 y 1791.

La torre tiene 49 metros de alto, está situada en las cordenadas 3º 23´N - 8º 24´W y su luz tiene un alcance de 24 millas. La luz del faro emite un grupo de 4 destellos cada 20 segundos.

Tower of Hercules The Tower of Hercules, in La Coruna (Spain). It is the oldest active lighthouse in the world. Built in the second century A.D. by the Romans, although mythology attributes to Hercules, its architect was actually Cayo Sevio Lupo, born in Coimbra (Portugal today), and he dedicated this work to Mars, the Roman god of war. Its current aspect is due to the restoration directed by the military engineer Eustaquio Giannini, by order of King Carlos III, between 1788 and 1791.
