Description

Unveiled in 1927, this was the first theatre designed by California's prolific S Charles Lee, then 27 years old. He managed to squeeze an extra 250 seats into the narrow lot previously occupied by a stage theatre, and incorporated such high-tech innovations as 'mechanical refrigeration' and sound. The Jazz Singer sneak-previewed here.

The terra-cotta is newly gleaming after a 2007 summer scrubbing.
