Summary edit

Description The Town Clock Building in Dubuque (1873). A town clock was a major luxury in the 19th century, as individuals could now organize activities to occur at specific times. A town clock was originally installed in 1864, but it collapsed in 1872 because the foundation could not support the clock's great weight. A new clock opened in 1873. As long as employees cranked it once a week, the clock remained accurate within two seconds. Dubuque decided to dismantle it in the 1920s, but found that the residents wanted to maintain it. It was electrified in 1927.
