Description

English: Arundel, West Sussex, Town Gate And Castle Walls, built in 1850 by w:Henry Howard, 13th Duke of Norfolk (1791-1856), KG. Listed building text[1]:

1850 (Date panel). Upper greensand. Ashlar plinth, coping and dressings: otherwise rock-faced rustication. Lodge adjoining gate is rectangular with 4 smaller rectangular turrets at angles. Pointed archway with machicolation above. Wall has crenellated parapet, with bartizans on outer side and semi-circular bastions on inner side. The Town Gate and Castle Walls were built as a result of the proposal of 1833 whereby w:Bernard Howard, 12th Duke of Norfolk (1765-1842), KG, (father of 13th Duke), undertook to build a new Town Hall at his own expense, in return for the gift of the north part of the High Street, which he wished to enclose within the Castle grounds.

Arms: Howard quartering Brotherton, Warenne and Mowbray. After 1842 the future 14th Duke (Henry Fitzalan-Howard, 14th Duke of Norfolk) (son of the 13th Duke) adopted as a prefix the additional surname of FitzAlan (of Arundel Castle, feudal Earls of Arundel, Barons Mowbray, etc), whose heiress in 1555 had married Thomas Howard, 4th Duke of Norfolk and changed the family coat of arms by replacing Mowbray in the 4th quarter with FitzAlan. Crest: On a chapeau gules turned up ermine a lion statant guardant with tail extended or ducally gorged argent (Crest of w:Thomas of Brotherton, 1st Earl of Norfolk, fifth son of King Edward I) (Montague-Smith, P.W.
