Summary edit

Description
English: Town Moor, Hartlepool Headland A coastal beacon will have been an important feature on the Heugh headland from the time of Hartlepool's earliest settlers. Sentries were posted there ready to light the beacons to warn the town-folk of Viking invaders, Scottish raiders, the Spanish Armada or Napoleon's planned invasion fleet in 1805. The first OS map shows a Coastguard Signalling Station and Semaphore in this location.

The Town Moor is an official village green and has provided common pasture for the use of Hartlepool residents for many centuries.

In 1201 a charter from King John freed the people of the town from feudal bondage and a further charter granted in 1230 included the right to hold a fair on the festival of St Lawrence. The modern carnival began in 1924 and is still held on the Moor, yearly, in August.
