Trabant heißt die ab 1957 in der DDR gefertigte Pkw-Baureihe der Hersteller VEB Automobilwerk Zwickau und VEB Sachsenring Automobilwerke Zwickau. Zwischen November 1957 und April 1991 wurden in Zwickau insgesamt 3.051.385 Fahrzeuge der Trabant-Baureihe produziert. Der Trabant 1.1 ist das letzte Fahrzeug der Trabant-Baureihe aus dem VEB Sachsenring Automobilwerke Zwickau, ab 1990 der Sachsenring Automobilwerke GmbH. Nach mehreren von der DDR-Regierung abgebrochenen Entwicklungsprojekten zeichnete sich Mitte der 1980er-Jahre schließlich die Entwicklung eines neuen Trabant-Modells ab. 1984 erwarb IFA von Volkswagen die Lizenz zum Bau von 1,1- und 1,3-l-Viertaktmotoren (EA 111). Während Wartburg 1.3 und Barkas B1000-1 den 1,3-l-Motor erhielten, wurde in den Trabant der 1,1-Liter eingebaut, der unter anderem im VW Polo verwendet wurde. Nach den großen finanziellen Investitionen in die Motorenstraße blieb nur noch wenig Geld zur Erneuerung des Modells. Die zunächst favorisierte Karosserie eines Prototyps wurde abgelehnt. Stattdessen verbarg sich die modernisierte Technik unter dem nur im Detail veränderten Äußeren des Trabant 601, so erhielt der Trabant 1.1 eine neue Blech-Motorhaube, einen neuen Grill, Kunststoffstoßstangen, neue Heckleuchten und einen Tankeinfüllstutzen hinten rechts. Auf den ersten Blick nicht zu sehen sind der verstärkte Vorderwagen zur Aufnahme des schweren Motors, die Scheibenbremsen vorn und die Schraubenfederung an der Hinterachse. Das neue Modell wurde im Herbst 1989 vorgestellt und sollte 18.900 Mark kosten. Der Wagen wurde allerdings nicht freudig angenommen. Nach 26 Jahren und bei einer Preissteigerung um 6.000 Mark wollte man ein Auto, das Weststandards so sehr hinterherhing, nicht mehr akzeptieren. Als im Mai 1990 die Produktion des als „IFA Trabant 1.1“ bezeichneten Wagens in Serie ging, war der Vertrag zur Währungs-, Wirtschafts- und Sozialunion mit der Bundesrepublik bereits unterzeichnet. Mit Einführung der DM in der DDR am 1. Juli 1990 waren Westautos für jedermann kurzfristig erhältlich. Dem Image und der Technik westeuropäischer Autohersteller hatte der Trabant nichts entgegenzusetzen. Die Nachfrage war entsprechend gering. Auch die Vermarktungsversuche als „Fun Car“ für unter 6.000 DM schlugen fehl. Nach nur zwölf Monaten verließ der letzte von 39.474 „1.1“ das Werk. Am 30. April 1991 endete damit nach 33 Jahren die Produktion des Trabants. The Trabant is a car that was produced by former East German auto maker VEB Sachsenring Automobilwerke Zwickau in Zwickau, Sachsen. It was the most common vehicle in East Germany, and was also exported to countries both inside and outside the communist bloc. The main selling points were that it had room for four adults and luggage in a compact, light and durable shell; it was fast (when introduced); and it was durable. With its mediocre performance, outdated and inefficient two-stroke engine (which returned poor fuel economy for the car's size and produced heavy exhaust), and production shortages, the Trabant is often cited as an example of the disadvantages of centralized planning; on the other hand, it is regarded with derisive affection as a symbol of the failed former East Germany and of the fall of communism (in former West Germany, as many East Germans streamed into West Berlin and West Germany in their Trabants after the opening of the Berlin Wall in 1989). It was in production without any significant changes for nearly 30 years with 3,096,099 Trabants produced in total. In 2008, Time magazine rated the Trabant as one of the 50 worst cars ever made. Starting in the summer of 1989, thousands of East Germans loaded their Trabants with as much as they could carry and drove to either Hungary or Czechoslovakia en route to West Germany – the so-called "Trabi Trail." Many of them had to get special dispensation to drive their Trabants into West Germany, since most of the Trabants on the road failed West German emissions standards (their pollution was four times the European average). In 1989 a licensed version of the Volkswagen Polo engine replaced the elderly two-stroke engine, the result of a trade agreement between the two German states. The model, known as the Trabant 1.1, also had minor improvements to the brake and signal lights, a revised grille, and MacPherson struts instead of the leaf spring-suspended chassis. However, by the time it entered production in May 1990, the two states had already agreed to reunification. It soon became apparent that there was no place for the Trabant in the reunified German economy. The inefficient, labour-intensive production line was kept open only because of government subsidies. Demand plummeted, as residents of the east preferred second-hand western cars, which were more efficient and put out less pollution. The Trabant production line closed in 1991 and the factory in Mosel (Zwickau), where the Trabant 1.1 had been made, was sold to Volkswagen. |
