Description
English: Track out of Wunkar (Yinkanie line, South Australian Railways) December 1973, two years after the line was closed. The line was built very cheaply (opened in 1925) to encourage agricultural development in the Murray Mallee region of South Australia. The photo shows how the track lacked ballast, being laid only on compacted earth; that sleepers (US: ties) had become covered with sand over the years; and kinks were in the track at rail joints.
