Summary edit

Description
English: Track to Patney and Chirton station (site of)
Patney and Chirton station opened in 1900 and closed in 1966 along with the railway to Devizes and Holt. It was originally named Patney Bridge station but was this was fairly rapidly changed as it was being confused with Putney Bridge station in London. This view shows the part of the station north of the line. In 1909 the platform there was greatly extended to provide for the arrival of large numbers of soldiers and horses for training on Salisbury Plain not far from here to the south. The footbridge originally had a roof over it. It remains to carry a footpath over the line. Folk hereabouts don't know how lucky they are. Seven kilometres to the west and you have to clamber over the ballast to cross the line 451743.
