Author | Homanns Erben (Die holländische Konkurrenz auf dem deutschen Landkartenmarkt hatte im 17. Jahrhundert in Deutschland kaum einen Kartenverlag aufkommen lassen. In Nürnberg etablierte sich aber als Nebenzweig der Kupferstecherkunst seit 1650 ein Kartenzeichnergewerbe. Dabei wurden vor allem ausländische Karten kopiert. Erst später, zu Beginn des 18. Jahrhunderts, schaffte ein Kartograph den Durchbruch: Johann Baptist Homann. 1702 eröffnete er in der freien Reichsstadt Nürnberg seinen Kartenverlag. Auch er lebte zuerst von dem Kopieren anderer Karten. Aber zunehmend brachte er auch eigene Originale auf den Markt. Bis 1724 hatte er bald 200 eigene Karten geschaffen. Homanns Großer Atlas aus dem Jahr 1716 umfasste immerhin schon 126 Tafeln. Die Homann-Karten sind heute noch ein Begriff. Nach seinem Tod 1724 übernahm sein Sohn Johann Christoph Homann den Verlag. Aber auch er starb schon 1730. Nun übernahm J. M. Franz und der Schwiegersohn des Johann Baptist Homann, Ebersperger als Homannsche Erben die Firma. Bekannte Kartographen, wie J. G.Gregorii, Johann Hübner, E. D. Hauber, J. G. Doppelmayr, G. M. Lowitz, J. M. Hase und T. Mayer pflegten das Erbe und schufen neue Karten.) | |||
