DescriptionTradescant Tomb (3496862840).jpg |
As well as founding England's first public museum at the Ark in Lambeth, Tradescant the Elder was head gardener at Hatfield and keeper of Charles I's gardens. Tradescant the Elder was a good friend of John Smith of Jamestown, and did a fair bit of travelling; his son, however, actually went over to Virginia, bringing back the royal Powhatan cloak and magnolias, amongst other things. The younger John Tradescant laid out the gardens at the Queens House in Greenwich. The Musaeum Tradescantianum was swindled from a drunk and grieving John Tredescant by the notorious Rosicrucian, cavalier, gold-digger and black magician, Elias Ashmole, and now forms the core of the so-called "<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/tpholland/5115082725/">Ashmolean</a>" in Oxford. |
