English: Trafalgar Square Christmas Tree 2009 - the first picture! Trafalgar Square has been presented with a large Norwegian tree each winter since 1947, as a token of friendship, and gratitude for Britains assistance during World War II. This historic tradition has become a definitive Christmas event in London, marking the onset of the festive season.
2009 was the first time I had attended the ceremony which accompanied the switching on of the lights. Trafalgar Square was busy, with people keen to occupy the "best" positions to see the action. The lights were switched on at 18.20, and this is the first photograph of the illuminated tree. More by luck than judgement, since I was too far away to hear the announcement; I was taking a long exposure (30 seconds) picture when the lights came on! |
