editDescriptionTransit of Venus at Griffith Observatory, Los Angeles, 5 June 2012 (7158919335).jpg |
English: Griffith Observatory, located in Los Angeles's Griffith Park and built in the 1930s for public enjoyment of astronomy, is normally closed on Tuesdays, but on this particular Tuesday, was open and extremely busy, to host a public viewing of the Transit of Venus.
The Transit of Venus, during which Venus comes exactly between the Sun and the Earth, and Venus appears as a dark circle on the solar disk, is a once-in-a-lifetime event. A pair of transits happen 8 years apart, after which a wait of over a hundred years is necessary before the next pair. As the other transit of the pair, on 8 June 2004, was not visible from Los Angeles, and as the previous transit before that was in December 1882, this was the first time that the transit was ever observed from Griffith Observatory. The next transit will be 10 December 2117. The transit has not begun yet, but many amateur astronomers, mostly from local astronomy clubs that host monthly public star parties here at Griffith Observatory, have set up their telescopes. Some are heavily filtered visible light, while others use hydrogen filters to enable observation of prominences. The golden line on the pavement marks the direction of sunset on Winter Solstice. |
