Summary edit
DescriptionTrent and Mersey Canal near Barton-under-Needwood, Staffordshire - geograph.org.uk - 1580510.jpg |
English: Trent and Mersey Canal near Barton-under-Needwood, Staffordshire. Mill Bridge (No 39) used to carry Mill Lane across the canal to the A38, and across. Since the dual carriageway was constructed, this route has been closed, and people from Barton-under-Needwood are routed to other more elaborate crossings which allow uninterrupted traffic flow on the A38.
The canal is alongside the A38 (to Derby) here, behind the hedge on the right. That follows the Roman course of Ryknild Street (Icknield Street) which ran from the Fosse Way at Bourton on the Water in Gloucestershire to Templeborough in South Yorkshire. It acquired the name Icknield Way during the 12th century, but it is now called Icknield Street (or Ryknild Street) to distinguish it from the older Icknield Way, an Iron Age trackway running from Norfolk to Dorset.
