Carta de Bento Gonçalves escrita na prisão do Forte da Lage, endereçada a Domingos José de Almeida e José Pinheiro de Ulhoa Cintra, respectivamente o Ministro do Interior e Fazenda e o Ministro da Justiça e dos Estangeiros do governo Farroupilha. Museu Farroupilha, Triunfo, RS. A transcrição é: "Amº (amigo) Almeida, e Sintra Lage 24 de Jan.ro de 1837. Meu f.º (filho) portador desta vos dirá o estado de opreção em q~ (que) estou nesta hedionda masmorra nou (noute/noite) e dia. Mas as boas notícias que tenho tido me tem dado tanto prazer que suprem tudo, m.mo (mesmo) te (até) a falta de ar que há neste inferno. Vejão como tratão os malvados que tem caído em vosso poder, tendo lembrança o misero estado em q~ eu e meus comp.ros (companheiros) estamos. Todavia inda não perdi a esperança de aparecer nessa. Aja união, e mais união, tudo se vencerá. Adeus am.os (amigos), não posso ser extenço m.a (minha) prisão não me dá lugar p. (para) mais. Sou vosso am.o (amigo) obrigado Bento Gos.
