Description
Nederlands: Negatief. Hoewel verschillende cultures werden onderhouden in Suriname, was suiker een van de meest winstgevende plantagegewassen. Als er over de slavernij in Suriname wordt gesproken, wordt de zin: "Hoe duur was de suiker?" dan ook vaak gebruikt, verwijzend naar de zware levens van de slaven. Later werden contractarbeiders uit India en het toenmalige Nederlands-Indie ingescheept, die voor een karig loon verder werkten op de plantages.

Tussen 1750 en 1863 liep het aantal suikerondernemingen flink af, terwijl de produktie verdubbelde. Verschillende innovaties hebben er voor gezorgd dat na 1770 de productiviteit van de rietakkers bleef stijgen. Behalve technologische vernieuwingen en de introductie van de trein, moesten de slaven ook harder en meer werken (van Stipriaan, 1993:134-146).
