Nederlands: Diorama. Dit diorama is van de suikerplantage "Merveille". De plantage is gelegen tussen de Suriname-rivier en de Paulus Kreek (zijrivier voornoemde rivier), welke niet in dit diorama te zien is. Links van het midden staat de directeurswoning, geflankeerd door twee kleinere huizen, vermoedelijk van opzichters. De blanke opzichters werden "blank officier" genoemd, een verbastering van het Engelse "overseeer" door blanken. De zwarte opzichters heetten "basja", eveneens een verbastering van "overseeer", maar dan in het neger-engels (Sranantongo).
Deze drie huizen zijn van wit hout met groene luiken. rechts van deze huizen ziet men achtereenvolgens een opslagplaats voor begasse (uitgeperste rietstengels); hierachter is iets van de slavenhuisjes te zien; een fabriek met getijdemolen; een kookhuis met schoorsteen; een destilleerderij (Surinaams: stijlerij); het plantageziekenhuis; botenhuis voor de tentboot en een wachtershuisje. Op de voorgrond zijn arbeiders aan het werk tussen de kokospalmen. Rechts van de suikerplantage is de Suriname-rivier te zien, waarop zich een schuit (Surinaams: pondo), een tentboot en een klein vaartuig bevinden. De meeste suikerplantages maakten d.m.v. een getijdemolen, waar het water van de rivier via de molensloot naartoe werd gevoerd, gebruik van het verschil tussen eb en vloed. De toevoer van het water, het opslaan en de afvoer kon door sluizen geregeld worden. Wanneer het suikerriet in de getijdemolen gekraakt en geperst was werd het sap naar het kookhuis getransporteerd om te worden ingedikt. De uitgeperste stengels, begasse (Surinaams: tras) gebruikte men als brandstof. In de stijlerij werd de melasse gedestilleerd tot alcohol of rum (bijprodukt). De bruine suiker werd in vaten verpakt en ingescheept in pondo's voor Paramaribo, waar het werd gewogen in de waag, alvorens de suiker naar Europa te verzenden. Voor personenvervoer gebruikte men tentbootjes; pondo's zijn voor vrachtvervoer. Het diorama is van Gerrit Schouten, geboren in 1779 als zoon van een Nederlander en creoolse vrouw. Hij behoorde tot de eerste kunstenaars in Suriname en specialiseerde zich in het maken van diorama's. Gerrit Schouten (1779-1839) was de eerste Surinaamse kunstenaar die erkenning kreeg. Hij was een bekwaam aquarellist van de rijke flora van Suriname maar hij werd het meest bekend als maker van kijkkastjes met een vernuftig perspectief. Deze diorama's met scènes uit de plantagekolonie maakte hij in opdracht van kolonialen die een aandenken mee terug wilden nemen naar Nederland.. Diorama van de suikerplantage Merveille |
