English: Saleswomen and a group of Creole men
Nederlands: Litho. Twee litho's door Madou naar tekeningen van P.J. Benoit. Ook hier is het verschil tussen slaven weer heel duidelijk: sommigen dragen goede kleren, anderen zijn zo goed als naakt. Op de onderste tekening zie je een (voormalige) slaaf, die zelf een slaaf heeft. De Europeanen hebben het zo lang volgehouden, mede dankzij een verdeel-en-heers politiek. Ze verleenden gunsten aan sommige slaven, die vervolgens anderen onderdrukten en bewaakten om de gunst niet te verliezen.
De bovenste litho toont een aantal huisslavinnen. Op hun hoofden dragen zij plateaus met Europese voorwerpen. Benoit is zo erg belangrijk gebleken voor het interpreteren van de slavernij en de koloniale geschiedenis.. Litho's voorstellende koopvrouwen en een groep Creoolse mannen |
