Het woonhuis van de eigenaar van een plantage was vaak een trots en luxe gebouw in karakteristiek Surinaamse stijl. De behuizing van de slaven was met de luxe woonhuizen een schrille tegenstelling. In de 18de eeuw waren het merendeels eenvoudige hutten, bedekt met palmbladeren. In de 19de eeuw kwamen er meer houten blokwoningen, waarin aparte vertrekken waren afgescheiden, in een stijl zoals die tegenwoordig nog te zien is op plantage Mariënburg. (Stipriaan, 'Surinaams contrast', p. 114) De plantage Mariënburg werd in 1745 aan de benedenloop van de Commewijne-rivier opgericht. Nadat het Fort Nieuw Amsterdam de benedenloop van de Commewijne beveiligde, kon met de aanleg van plantages langs die rivier worden begonnen. De oprichter was Maria de la Jaille, weduwe van David de Hoy. Het plantagegebied is in 1770 verdubbeld, nadat de toenmalige eigenaar aangrenzend land had mogen ontginnen. In het begin werd op de plantage waarschijnlijk suiker verbouwd, maar later is overgeschakeld naar koffie. In de tijd tussen 1745 en de slavenemancipatie van 1863 had de plantage diverse eigenaren gehad. In 1881 de Nederlandse Handels Maatschappij (NHM) eigenaar geworden van de plantage. De NHM koos Mariënburg als vestigingsplaats voor een grote centrale suikerfabriek. (Dalhuisen et al., 2007) . Woonhuis op plantage Mariënburg in Suriname |
