Summary edit

Description
English: On February 10, 2019, the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) acquired a true-color image of Tropical Cyclone Gelena spinning to the southeast through the archipelago of Mauritius. At the time the image was acquired, Gelena was being pushed by a trough on its northwestern side and beginning to battle increasing wind shear.

According to the Global Disaster Alert and Coordination System (GDACS), the cyclone hit the island of Rodrigues during the night of February 10 with wind gusts of up to 160 km/h (101 mph), leaving 90% of the island’s 40,000 residents without electricity. Most of the damage to the island has been downed trees, which have cut electricity and phone lines, and blocked roads.

On the afternoon of February 11, the Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC) reported that Gelena carried maximum sustained winds of about 57.5 mph (92.6 km/h) and it was located near 25.2 south and 71.4 east or approximately 964 miles (1,551 km) east-southeast of Port Louis, Mauritius. It was traveling to the east-southeast at 16 mph (26 km/h). Tropical Cyclone Gelena is forecast to dissipate over open ocean by February 14 and is not expected to pose additional dangers to populated areas.
