Description
English: Tropical Cyclone Mandous made landfall near the town of Mamallapuram in the state of Tamil Nadu, southeast India late on December 9, 2022. As the storm approached landfall, maximum sustained winds were estimated at 50 mph (80.5 km/h). Mandous appeared to be on a weakening trend as it approached the coast and quickly weakened to a depression, with maximum sustained winds of 35 mph (56 km/h), once over land.

According to media reports, state officials reported 185 houses and huts damaged by Tropical Cyclone Mandous and 400 trees uprooted in Chennai, the state capital. Up to five people have died to storm-related incidents, four of which were electrocutions from downed powerlines.

The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on board NASA’s Aqua satellite acquired a true-color image of Tropical Cyclone Mandous on December 9 as it was approaching landfall. At that time, the large cloud-filled center remained over the Bay of Bengal, but convective bands were bringing rain and wind gusts from Sri Lanka northward to cover most of Andhra Pradesh.
