Summary edit

Description This is the Tuckasegee Wesleyan Church, which sits prominently perched on a hilltop overlooking the confluence of the east and west forks of the Tuckaseigee River at Tuckasegee, North Carolina. The community of Tuckasegee is rather rural, but sits on the site of the ancient Cherokee “Middle Town” or Tuckaseigee, which was destroyed and burned to the ground by an English raid during the Anglo-Cherokee War in 1761. Founded in 1913, the church was started by Wesleyan Missionaries whom came to the community from South Carolina, the church building was constructed soon afterwards, possibly at one point also serving as the community’s schoolhouse. The white, wood-frame building is highly visible from North Carolina Highway 107, which runs through the community between Cullowhee and Glenville, and has been a landmark for over a century, surviving floods, storms, and the rapid onset of modernization.
