Description

Sentinel Hill, just west of the city core, is a very nice vantage point for taking in the Tucson landscape. As the eastern slope of Sentinel Hill has a white letter "A" to represent the University of Arizona, Sentinel Hill is also known as the "A Mountain."

I love Tucson's natural setting. It is framed by four picturesque mountain ranges: Rincon to the east (left), Santa Rita to the south (right), Tucson to the west (behind me), and Santa Catalina to the north (off the left edge). The desert plant life forms are also very charming. If I were to pick a place to live in based on geography alone, Tucson would be a strong contender.

However, I don't have much love for Tucson's man-made developments, run-down and homely. Tucson's low-wage economy is outright depressing, as I know too well from my own stint here in 2001. In this photo, I can see a few of them - the I-10/I-19 interchange nearby, which also is Tucson's only freeway interchange, and the Davis-Monthan Air Force Base, home to the Aircraft Maintenance And Regeneration Center (AMARC) better known as the "Boneyard" where old military aircraft are stored and/or scrapped. The Air Force, and its contractors such as Raytheon, provide the primary economic activities in the Tucson area, while I-10 connects Tucson to Phoenix as well as to California and Texas, and I-19 provides connection to Mexico's west coast via Mexican Highway 15.

Back in 2001, I was forced to drive Tucson's streets in a previously wrecked Ford Contour, unable to even afford gasoline on some days. Now, I am so much happier to be back in a luxury Hyundai that is fully paid for, and with some spare cash in my purse. This weekend jaunt is my first time back in Tucson since the 2001 poverty days, though I had made a stopover here in 2006 on my way back from Carlsbad Caverns as well.
