DescriptionTundra Swans on the Frozen Nottawasaga River (13315227615).jpg |
These beautiful birds showed up unexpectedly today on our still-solidly frozen river. I suspect they were crossed up by the severity and length of this winter, and thought they'd encounter open water - of which there still is none (March 21). They hung around, moving only when they'd soiled a resting spot (you can see one behind the foreground bird), for at least 5 and a half hours, departing around 6:35 pm to find a less exposed place to spend the night. My first guess was trumpeter swans, but I revised that to tundras (also known as whistling swans) in light of their straight neck demeanours. Now I'm thinking my first guess was perhaps correct, as they lack that bit of orange at the upper edge of the otherwise black beak that distinguishes tundras from trumpeters. I'd love for a swan authority to set me straight. |
