The baptistry basin of the Basilica of St Vitalis. Its shape is quite beautiful, so are also the details. It is set in a separate chamber behind the apse of the church. It dates back to the end of the 6th century.

Byzantine church of Saint Vitalis, built in the 5th or early 6th C (Jensen). The baptistery is in a space next to the church, behind the apse. It is an unusual labial shape with two sets of four steps at either end. Four circular stone bases at the corner points on the wide rim suggest that a canopy or ciborium once covered the basin. The rich mosaic decoration includes a geometric pattern, a flower and vine design, crosses and, on the floor of the font basin, a Latin cross whose top arm curls into the Greek letter rho with alpha and omega inscribed under the horizontal arms of the cross. An inscription, written large, underlined letters on the ledge of the font, is a reference to the votive offering of the one(s) who probably donated money for the baptistery.
