At the end of the street, Place du 7 November 1987, is this clock tower and fountain. "Place du 7 November 1987" boulvard got its name because Zine El Abidine Ben Ali assumed the Presidency on 7 November 1987 in a bloodless coup. On 14 January 2011, after a month of protests, Zine El Abidine Ben Ali fled to Saudi Arabia with his wife and their three children. The interim Tunisian government asked Interpol to issue an international arrest warrant, charging him for money laundering and drug trafficking. He and his wife were sentenced in absentia to 35 years in prison on 20 June 2011. In June 2012, Ben Ali has been sentenced to life imprisonment in absentia for inciting violence and murder. |
