| Description |
English: Turnpike signpost. This signpost is at a crossroads on the Skipton to Addingham turnpike (formerly a Roman road). The destinations indicated are Skipton and Addingham on the sunny side and Draughton and Silsden on the shady side. Unfortunately the post has been rotated almost 180º so that modern travellers would be better consulting a map.
The inscription has been made without planning the fit of the names to the space available so that, for example, the last letter of Skipton is a superscript. Clearly not a stonemason, just a bloke with a chisel. Wind generators near Chelker Reservoir are visible in the distance |
