Summary edit
DescriptionTurnpike stone on West Park Stray - geograph.org.uk - 666661.jpg |
English: Turnpike stone on West Park Stray The photographer is unsure about the purpose of this 2 metre high inscribed gritstone rock that stands at the side of the main road along West Park. It stands close to the junction of two turnpike roads that were developed in 1752/3 from Leeds to Harrogate, Ripon and Baldersby and from Otley to Knaresborough via Beckwithshaw and Harrogate. One would assume that the stone marks the edge of the turnpike and may have been set up to deter travellers from using the Stray instead of the road. |
