Description
English: Days after Typhoon Doksuri slammed the Philippines, Taiwan, and China, another strong storm was threatening more damage in the Western Pacific region.

On the morning of August 1, 2023, Typhoon Khanun was moving towards China when the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Aqua satellite acquired a true-color image of the storm. Near the same time, Khanun reached peak strength, carrying maximum sustained winds of about 140 mph (225 km/h), which would place it as a Category 4 storm on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale.

Through August 1, Khanun continued moving northwest, with drenching rains, storm surge, and strong winds affecting Okinawa and the northern Philippines. However, with a strong steering ridge sliding over eastern China, conditions have become less favorable for the storm, leading to weakening. The same ridge is forecast to cause the storm to stall, weaken, and then wobble nearly in place for a day or two before heading to the east-northeast and away from China.

According to the Joint Typhoon Warning Center, at 2100 UTC (5:00 EDT) on August 1, Typhoon Khanun had made its closest point of approach to Okinawa, which was about 61 miles (98 km) south-southwest of Kadena Air Force Base. At that time, Khanun carried maximum sustained winds of about 126 mph (203 km/h), making it a Category 3 storm. While the eye stayed offshore, strong bands carrying torrential rain and high wind battered Okinawa. Early damage reports include widespread power outages, as well injuries. One man died when a building collapsed, according to news reports, with at least 11 more people injured.
