Title
Typus Montis Vesuvii 1638
Description

On a visit to southern Italy in 1638, Jesuit scholar Athanasius Kircher watched Vesuvius as it began to reverberate and smoulder. Overcome by curiosity, he hiked to the rim of the active volcano. He later wrote, "When finally I reached the crater, it was terrible to behold. The whole area was lit up by the fires, and the glowing sulphur and bitumen produced an intolerable vapour. It was just like hell, only lacking the demons to complete the picture!"

From the 17th century, prints were increasingly used to document all the aspects of nature and science, both for specialists and for general audiences.
