SECRETARY OF ENERGY BODMAN ENTERING THE SAVANNAH RIVER SITE'S DEFENSE WASTE PROCESSING FACILITY, MARCH 11, 2005.

THE SAVANNAH RIVER SITE'S DEFENSE WASTE PROCESSING FACILITY NEAR AIKEN, S.C., IS THE WORLD'S LARGEST RADIOACTIVE WASTE VITRIFICATION FACILITY. THE PURPOSE OF DWPF IS TO IMMOBILIZE APPROXIMATELY 37 MILLION GALLONS OF HIGH LEVEL RADIOACTIVE WASTE FROM UNDERGROUND TANKS AT THE SRS. THE HIGH LEVEL WASTE IS VITRIFIED INTO A DURABLE BOROSILICATE GLASS, POURED INTO STAINLESS STEEL CANISTERS AND STORED PRIOR TO EVENTUAL DISPOSAL IN A GEOLOGIC REPOSITORY.
