Lahore, April 4, 2017 – Mr. John Groarke, United States Agency for International Development (USAID) Mission Director to Pakistan, inaugurated a new Faculty of Education building today at the Institute of Education and Research (IER) at the University of Punjab. Joining him for the ceremony was the Vice Chancellor, University of the Punjab, Dr. Zaffar Mueen Nasar.


“The United States Government is investing in quality education because we recognize that progress and quality of life are directly linked to education. And the first step in investing in quality education is investing in teachers. This Faculty of Education building will serve to advance not only the quality of teacher training, but also the development and prosperity of Punjab,” stated Mr. Groarke, addressing a large gathering of university students and faculty. Vice Chancellor Nasar thanked the U.S. government for its continued support of Pakistan’s education sector at the ceremony.


This USAID-funded Faculty of Education building is an environmentally-conscious, handicapped accessible, and earthquake-resistant facility that includes 35,000 square feet of covered area, 12 classrooms, a multi-purpose hall, a learning resource center, laboratories, a seminar room, and office space for faculty. The University of Punjab in Lahore is one of 17 universities in Pakistan where USAID has invested $45 million in constructing Faculty of Education buildings to help attract the best and brightest to the teaching profession in Pakistan. The Institute of Education and Research at the University of Punjab is one of 111 teacher training institutes working with the USAID Pakistan Reading Project to train aspiring teachers through the Associates and Bachelor’s Degree in Education programs.


During his day-long visit to Lahore, USAID Mission Director Groarke also met with the students and faculty of the University of Punjab and the Chairman of Punjab’s Higher Education Commission.
