Description

Kumasi Central Market in Ghana’s Ashanti Region. Photo credit: Yooku Ata-Bedu, USAID/Ghana

After participating in Feed the Future’s Africa Leadership course, Hajara Taimako, an entrepreneur and farmer started working to transform the lives of “kayayei,” or women who work in the markets and carry goods on their heads. These women migrate from Ghana’s Northern Region to urban cities in search of economic opportunities, but are often subjected to physical abuse at the hands of market women and male traders, sexual abuse at the hands of male porters and traders. Taimako offers training in vocational skills including on how to process moringa, baobab, rice, shea butter, soybean, sesame and balanite. This has helped to improve the economic status of women and girls in her community, and dissuaded them from entering the “Kayayei” trade.
